BodyDreaming and Mask Workshop in Greece (June 9-14): From Formless to Form

This workshop will bring you through an in-depth process that includes BodyDreaming, expressive arts, movement and mask work, where the way of discovery aims to bring that which is formless — perceived perhaps in hints and guesses (T.S. Eliot) into form, in the creation of a mask.

Mask Process — One of the greatest joys of this particular mask process is that it is shaped on your face (a part or whole mask), holding the unique blueprint of your personal origin-form — that is, aligned to your deep self and roots of origin. Once ‘out there’, transformation begins. In the workshop we will engage in a range of processes that free up spontaneity and bring into form what is becoming enlivened in you. Processes that are enriched by the collective dynamics of the group, in the delightful space of the olive garden overlooking the sea, where the group energy and co-created ‘imaginal’ field, heighten discovery.

Your mask then becomes a mirror, a voice, a resonance, a resource, for meaning-making and new discovery, at the workshop and after you take it home with you.

Movement and dance will be part of working together in bringing “Formless to Form”. As we retreat from our busy lives we will begin by allowing our bodies to slow down, so that we all feel safe and connected enough to remain interested and curious about new, emerging experiences. Drawing on the folk traditions of The Middle East and North Africa, we will explore our relationship to gravity and space, gradually increasing the flow of energy in compressed tissues, musculature and bones.

In line with the ideas of Winnicott, who believed that only when we are absorbed in playing are we closer to our ‘true selves’. In this workshop we provide opportunities for creativity and play; creating the conditions for images to arise, for spontaneous movements to happen, to track the sensations in the body, and work from the inside out to open to new form.

We will follow a rhythm of daily movement to inspire the mask work and explore your deeper inner self.

BodyDreaming is an integral part of the mask making process, offering tools to help create greater tolerance in our nervous system responses so that we can be more present in the ‘here and now’,  towards what is presenting as ‘new’. This openness to new experience is not guaranteed and old defenses may surface in the face of creativity. By paying attention to our dream images and the resonance we feel with them in our bodies, we uncover where old patterns and defenses lie and where the new impulse, or energy may be stirring in our bodies.

Through BodyDreaming we learn to build greater capacity to receive the new image, so that the creative process is not experienced as overwhelming. Learning inner and outer attunement, felt-sense and tracking, we co-regulate ourselves in the environment of the olive garden.

We come to meet the archetypal energy with greater ease, play and depth. Bringing “Formless to Form”, we come home to ourselves in mask.

NOTE: Given the starting and ending times of the workshop, you will need to arrive on June 8th and depart on June 15th. This is taken into account in the accommodations fee.

Samhain BodyDreaming™ and Clay Mask Workshop

“We come of age as masks, Our true face never speaks”
– Rainer Maria Rilke

(In response to the call from previous participants and in line with their feedback we are extending this popular workshop by one night; we have managed to secure another day along with the use of an additional art room.)

Come and create a clay mask at Samhain, the time of year when the Cailleach, the Old Hag of Winter, makes her descent into the Underworld to incubate the seeds of the new life that will emerge at Imbolc, the Celtic spring.

We meet the Cailleach at the threshold of Winter in working with the damp, dark clay, learning to trust our impulses, listening to our dream images, feeling our senses engage with the prima materia of the raw clay. The mask begins to reveal herself and we begin to relate to the mask energy, the hidden face of the feminine.

Using a combination of Qigong and BioDynamic Craniosacral work we will deepen into our bodies to see how our energy is moving and resonating at this time in the year’s cycle. The bodywork will prepare us to meet a body of “matter” – the clay – and to make contact with the Cailleach energy.

And we will experience BodyDreaming™,  a way of working with dreams and images that tracks the pathways in the body where the energy of the dream is held. It invites us into the place of healing between body and dream, where old traumas, symptoms and complexes hold fast in the neural pathways of the body. When supported, the body may be ready to release this blocked energy and be restored to its inherent organic wisdom. Image and impulse align with greater ease and fluidity. We feel the ground of our sensing body interweaving with psyche, recovering our connection with the living earth in a mutual participation.

Come and discover the mask that will take you into Winter, be your guide and companion in the times of descent and incubation.

The Handless Maiden – A BodyDreaming™ Ongoing Professional Development Module

“Only a girl like this can know
what’s happened to you.
If she were here she would
reach out her arms towards
you now, and touch you
with her absent hands
and you would feel nothing,
but you would be touched all the same.”
~ Margaret Atwood

“The Handless Maiden offers material for a woman’s entire life process, and covers a many- years-long journey. It is about women’s initiation through the rite of endurance, meaning to harden, to make sturdy, to make robust, to strengthen. Endurance means we are making something substantial.”      ~ C. Pinkola-Estes

What is it to be a woman today? What is it that is coming into consciousness individually and collectively at this time of great change? What are the values that we cherish? How do we embody this new consciousness? How might we find our own robust and sturdy action in a world which is crying out for the touch of the feminine?

This workshop offers the opportunity to explore these questions through the story “The Handless Maiden”, as well as through play, embodiment, art, discussion and BodyDreaming™.

BodyDreaming™ is a way of working with dreams and images that tracks the pathways in the body where the energy of the dream is held. It invites us into the place of healing between body and dream/image, where old traumas, symptoms and complexes hold fast in the neural pathways of the body. When supported, the body may be ready to release this blocked energy and be restored to its inherent organic wisdom. Image and impulse align with greater ease and fluidity and we can feel the ground of our sensing body interweaving with our dreaming psyche, which opens us to a connection with the living earth, in a mutual participation.

Discovering the Unlived Life with BodyDreaming™ and Mask Work

The workshop will be led by Sue Congram, Marian Dunlea and Pauline Sayhi

Working with BodyDreaming™, mask work, art, voice and movement, we will connect more deeply to our bodies and psyche allowing our imagination to flow freely. Surrounded by the beauty of Skites on the edge of the Aegean Sea, a source of calm and energy, we will give expression to the unlived life by making a mask. We will then explore how to live the new energy that arises.

If you have already made a mask in a previous workshop, you may wish to bring it and deepen your understanding and experience of your unfolding life. This deepening process opens up new dimensions in the mask. If you would like to learn more about the practicalities and deep processes of mask work, Sue and Marian will bring elements of this into the teachings of the week.

This popular workshop is in its 12th year. Numbers are limited. To avoid disappointment we encourage you to book early. The workshop will end late on June 16 (so it is suggested to stay until the morning of June 17).

Discovering the Unlived Life Through Dreams and Mask Work

Sue Congram Greece
“Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become
” Carl Gustav Jung

This workshop uses dream work and active imagination, body and voice work, mask and art to offer reflective space to explore the as yet ‘unlived life’, the potential to become who we are meant to be.

Skites is beautifully situated and ideally suited to this kind of exploration. We will work under a canopy of trees, overlooking the sea, supported by the beauty of nature. There we will awaken to our body’s wisdom, listen to our dreams and give expression to this new energy in the creation of a mask. We will draw on the teachings of Marion Woodman and the BodySoul work in conjunction with Jungian and Gestalt theory.

This workshop is for:
· Men and women who are engaged in their own personal work and want to inquire deeper
· People who have worked with masks and want to explore more fully the relationship between mask work and dreams
· People who are professionally engaged in working with the development of others and interested in learning about the process of ‘active imagination’ using dreams, art, body, voice and mask work
· Couples have benefitted enormously from attending this workshop together, however this is not an event for remedial work on relationships that are breaking down, but an opportunity for deepening your own self understanding in a shared space.
